Meet Nathan Roberts - Winner of 2013 Undergraduate Research Award

This year's winner researched and wrote a paper examining how a predefined culture created by a hegemonic power in the world system has affected development of consumer culture in China for Professor Greg Knehans’s Politics of Globalization course in the Fall 2012. Learn more about this topic, the research involved and background on our winner in this podcast, as Kimberly Lutz interviews Nathan Roberts, the 2013 Winner of University Libraries Undergraduate Research Award for PSC 344 paper "Chinese Consumers: World Systems and World Cultural Analysis of Culture Hybridity."

The University Libraries Undergraduate Research Award is given in recognition of an outstanding undergraduate research project by an individual or a group that best demonstrates the ability to locate, select, and synthesize information form library resources and uses those resources in the creation of an original research project in any media. The winning entry wins a cash prize of $500 funded by the university libraries. This year it was awarded on April 7th 2013 at the undergraduate honors convocation.

Help the Libraries, Help Yourself: Amnesty for Overdue and Lost Books

This May, the UNCG Libraries is changing circulation systems and wants as many items as possible returned before May 16 so that accounts may be cleared before the switch.

To help the effort we are offering fee and fine amnesty! From April 24-May 16, you may return Jackson or Harold Schiffman Music Library Lost or Overdue books and pay no fines or fees. No questions asked!

Here's the "fine" print: Fines and fees will only be waived for Libraries books returned during this period. No credit will be given towards fines or fees for reserves, technology or AV equipment, DVDs, damaged items, or on any items returned prior to April 24.

As always, no refunds or credits can be given on items more than 6 months overdue.

If you are not ready to return some library materials, please plan to renew those items before May 16.

Student Worker Award

Today marks the end of Student Worker Appreciation week. University libraries has celebrated this for 6 years now by providing one student worker with an award for Outstanding Student Library Worker. We have many wonderful nominees from our excellent student workers here at the University Libraries but the winner was Alaina Jones who works at the Harold Shiffman Music Library.

Alaina's supervisor MK Amos had this to say: "Alaina handles whatever situation she encounters beautifully – with poise, grace and intelligence. Alaina is the kind of student employee who you encounter once or twice during a student supervisor career if you are lucky."

Congratulations to Alaina! And thank you to each and everyone of our student workers, you make the library a better place!
