What: Game Night in Jackson library. board, card, and console video games for all ages. Also free pizza and drinks!

Where: Jackson Library's newest space, the DMC, located in the lower level of Jackson Library

Tony Horwitz to visit UNCG September 7

University Libraries and BOOKMARKS festival in Winston Salem proudly present Author Tony Horwitz. He will be speaking in the reading room in Jackson Library on Friday, September 7th at 4pm. Horwitz is the author of many books including Confederates in the Attic and Midnight Rising: John Brown and the Raid that Started the Civil War.

The event is free and will be followed by a book signing. Copies of his books are available in the UNCG bookstore and will also be available for purchase at the event.

Digital Media Commons

Have you had a chance to visit the lower level of Jackson Library since the start of the school year? It's so much more than a space for books and documents now! It's the DMC, our new study and work space, the Digital Media Commons! We have computers, scanners, adobe software and informed staff ready to help you with your digital needs!

Awesome spaces for studying (we call it the ottoman empire)

We have tons of group study rooms you can reserve on the DMC page

Also private spaces for you to work on video editing

Most of all the space is for students, faculty and staff to use as best fits their scholarly, professional and personal needs.

Here are some of the things we helped students with in just the last week (our first week open!):

* Helped add images to blogs

* Helped students use scanners (free scanning to email)

* Helped with recording and playback on digital voice recorders

* Helped to design video presentations

* Helped students create slideshows with audio

* Helped students to use adobe Illustrator to sketch image ideas

The DMC space is open and staffed from 8am until midnight on Sunday-Thursday, from 8am-10pm on Fridays, and 10am-10pm on Saturdays

WorldCat Local at UNCG

Hi Friends!

as you may have noticed by now we have changed our library search (catalog). Its called worldcat and as the name implies it's a catalog for the world! It will tell you about materials both at our library and at libraries around the world.

Welcome Back!!!!

Students!!!!

oh how I have missed you all over the summer. Welcome back to campus, welcome back to classes and welcome back to studying in one of our excellent libraries.

So much has happened over the summer, we have renovated spaces and opened new ones!

The Harold Schiffman Music Library has gained a new name and an awesome renovation

Just look at that team work to get things done!

Be sure to mark your calendars for Friday, October 5th at 4pm. There will be a dedication and naming ceremony.

You also need to check out the lower level of Jackson library! We worked hard all summer and are happy to announce the opening of the Digital Media Commons (DMC). Its a great place to work on digital projects and also a great place to study.

The space is open and ready for you to use, but we will also be having an open house there on Tuesday, September 18th from 4:00-5:30pm. You can meet the awesomely helpful staff and see the space in action.

There are tons of events planned for the coming semester and I'll let you know about them as they come. Welcome Back or Welcome for the first time to all our first years. We are so happy you are here!

Digital Media Commons

Friends!

Jackson library has exciting new changes going on in the lower level. As of Monday August 13, 2012 we have officially opened the brand new Digital Media Commons. What is a Digital Media Commons for you ask? So glad you asked:

The Digital Media Commons (DMC)

• Open and staffed the same hours as reference (meaning till midnight during the semester)

• Expert help from library and media studies staff

• Computers, scanners, adobe suite software

• We have group study rooms, presentation practice spaces, digital media editing rooms

•  Help with posters, videos, blogs, web designs, digital images, flash and software

You can come take a look anytime! Also you can already reserve rooms here.

Freshmen Summer Reading Project

Hi lovely students, faculty, staff and friends,

This year the book chosen as the first year summer read is Wine to Water: a bartenders quest to bring clean water to the world by Doc Hendley. This is a non-fiction book about a bartender who decides to help bring clean water to those without it.

There will be two events associated with this book. 

August 18th at 12:30pm in the Cone Ballroom in the EUC there will be a book discussion among first year students. First Year students can sign up for the program at this link.

September 12th at 7:00pm in the Aycock Auditorium there will be a presentation by the author. The event is free and open to the public, with a book signing to follow.

Summer Reading Recommendation

Unwind

by Neal Shusterman

Set in a future America, this book takes place after the second civil war of the United States has ended with the unthinkable. In order to satisfy the pro-life and pro-choice camps, abortion has been banned, instead parents can choose to "unwind" their children between the ages of 13 and 18. "Unwinding" is a surgical process that takes every part of the teen and donates it to others (generally the highest bidders). The process will terminate the teen while at the same time they are still alive only in a separated state. While an improbable premise, this story which follows three teens being unwound for three different reasons and their fight to keep themselves together, will keep readers glued to the pages. A teen dystopian book with a far creepier vision than most.

This coming of age story, by Middlesex author Jeffery Eugenides, looks at the lives of three young adults as they struggle to find their place in the world.  Set in the 1980's, it centers around a lopsided love triangle, where the characters have to learn not only about each other but themselves as well. This includes mental illness, a drive to find religions place in the world and a need to understand how to move into adulthood. Looking at love and the process of becoming who we are, this book is written in a manner that will entice and hold the readers.
